چکیده

[1] The distribution of daily North Atlantic jet latitude is analyzed in 45 CMIP3 integrations. It is demonstrated that models that place the jet equatorward of its observed position have more positively skewed jet lati tude distributions, while models that correctly place the jet have symmetric distributions like that of the observations. The jet is shown to be more persistent at equatorward latitudes compared to poleward latitudes, consistent with previous findings in the Southern Hemisphere. There is a robust decrease in annual blocking frequency as the jet shifts poleward with global warming, with larger decreases seen for models with larger jet shifts, consistent with the effect of latitude on jet persistence. These results imply that model biases of jet latitude of 1°–2° could result in large differences in jet variability and frequency of extreme events predicted for the future. Citation: Barnes, E. Testing a theory for the effect of latitude on the persistence of eddy‐driven jets using CMIP3 simulations

[1] The effect of latitude on the persistence of north–south shifts in the position of the jet is investigated in 37 CMIP3 integrations over four forcing scenarios. The persistence of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) decreases when the mean jet is located closer to the pole. An asymmetry is shown whereby the equatorward‐shifted jet is more persistent than the poleward‐shifted jet. The sphericity...

Behaviour of the winter North Atlantic eddy-driven jet stream in the CMIP3 integrations

A systematic analysis of the winter North Atlantic eddy-driven jet stream latitude and wind speed from 52 model integrations, taken from the coupled model intercomparison project phase 3, is carried out and compared to results obtained from the ERA-40 reanalyses. We consider here a control simulation, twentieth century simulation, and two time periods (2046–2065 and 2081–2100) from a twenty-fir...

Variability of the North Atlantic eddy-driven jet stream

Much of the atmospheric variability in the North Atlantic sector is associated with variations in the eddy-driven component of the zonal flow. Here we present a simple method to specifically diagnose this component of the flow using the low-level wind field (925-700 hPa). We focus on the North Atlantic winter season in the ERA-40 reanalysis. Diagnostics of the latitude and speed of the eddy-dri...

Dynamical Evolution of North Atlantic Ridges and Poleward Jet Stream Displacements

The development of a particular wintertime atmospheric circulation regime over the North Atlantic, comprising a northward shift of the North Atlantic eddy-driven jet stream and an associated strong and persistent ridge in the subtropics, is investigated. Several different methods of analysis are combined to describe the temporal evolution of the events and relate it to shifts in the phase of th...

The Interannual Relationship between the Latitude of the Eddy-Driven Jet and the Edge of the Hadley Cell

A strong correlation between the latitudes of the eddy-driven jet and of the Hadley cell edge, on interannual time scales, is found to exist during austral summer, in both the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis and the models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, phase 3 (CMIP3). In addition, a universal ratio close to 1:2 characterizes the robust connection between these two latitudes ...
